Perasmian PerekaWEDNESDAY, 29 OCTOBER – The research and innovation culture should be applied to all university community to ensure that Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) would always be a reference centre, locally and abroad.

This was stated by UMS Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Datuk Dr. Mohd. Harun Abdullah at the closing ceremony of the 7th Research and Invention 2014 Competition (PEREKA) yesterday.

According to him, the university’s management would always give priority to the provision of the best research facilities such as incentives and research grants to researchers.

“UMS will continue to provide funding to researchers to protect intellectual property, attending of conferences and exhibitions as well as international invention competition at national and international levels,” he added.

His speech was read by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic and International) UMS, Prof. Dr. Shariff Abdul Kadir Shariff Omang Al-Haj.

Also present were the Chief Librarian of UMS, Dyg. Rukiah Ag. Amit and Senior Officers of the university. – ZMD (fl)

pereka AnnitaWEDNESDAY, 29 OCTOBER - The 7th Research and Invention Competition (PEREKA), Universiti Malasyia Sabah (UMS) in its closing ceremony today gave recognition to 204 projects competed in the research and innovation categories.

A new award was also introduced this year namely Special EcoCampus Award given to research or innovation that had the characteristics consistent with UMS EcoCampus in tandem with UMS efforts towards achieving EcoCampus status come 2018.

The special award was won by Dr. Collin G. Joseph of the Faculty of Science and Natural Resources (FSSA) with the title of his project ‘A Novel Combo Design of a Portable Ozone Generator With Attached Air Compressor for Use in Wastewater Remediation.’

A total of 32 gold medals, 67 silver and 105 bronze were awarded to the winners of this year’s PEREKA.

Dr. Annita Yong Seok Kian of Borneo Marine Research Institute (IPMB) and Major (PA) Assoc. Prof. Dr. Norazah Mohd Suki of the Faculty of International Finance Labuan (FKAL), each winning three gold in the research category for their projects.

For the record, at last year’s PEREKA 2012 saw researchers won 18 gold, 26 silver and 23 bronze in six invention competitions within the country and abroad. – HH (fl)

LoI UMS-jkr-fsTHURSDAY, 23 OCTOBER – Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS), Public Works Department (JKR) and Forever Sabah X-Team signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) to collaborate in producing a sewage plant in Sabah.

The event was held at UMS Foundation witnessed by staff and related agencies from the three organisations.

UMS was represented by the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering (FKJ), Prof. Dr. Ir. Rosalam Sarbatly, while JKR was represented by its director, Datuk Ir. John Anthony. Forever Sabah X-Team was represented by its director, Datuk Junaidi Payne.

Speaking to the media after the event, Datuk John said the three organisations that signed the LoI will execute their responsibilities according to their respective specialities.

“UMS will venture into new technologies in the treatment of sewage. JKR however, will implement this technology whilst Forever Sabah will apply awareness activities to the public,” he explained.

Meanwhile, Prof. Dr. Ir. Rosalam said FKJ will give its full cooperation in seeing the success of this mission.

“FKJ does not have any problems in executing this task as we have our own experts in this field,” he said. – SS (fl)

elec ppibWEDNESDAY, 29 OCTOBERUniversiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) students were reminded to sharpen their skills and confidence in the use of English language, not only in the classroom but also in their daily activities.

Dean of the Centre for the Promotion of Knowledge and Language (PPIB), Prof. Dr. Vincent Pang said the English language should be used widely covering correspondence, email, Facebook, Twitter, coffee shop chats and so on.

“In this era of globalisation, English language has become the language that is important for everyone to interact in. the success of a country and its people depends on how things can be produced widely through effective interaction using the English language.

“The organising of the English Language Enhancement Clinic (ELEC) by PPIB is one of our efforts towards that direction,” he said when officiating the ELEC programme recently.

With the slogan, ‘Say it Right, Say it in English!’, the one-week programme was attended by 27 UMS students, which not only apply basic lessons in English but the students were also exposed to building self-confidence that will increase their confidence level and communication.

HariApresiasiFSMP 1THURSDAY, 23 OCTOBER – The Faculty of Food Science and Nutrition (FSMP), Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) will be organising a ‘Sabah Ethnic Traditional Food Appreciation Day’ on 6 November 2014 (Thursday).

This programme is organised in conjunction with UMS’ 20th anniversary celebrations this year.

The aim of this programme is to expose locals and visitors alike in understanding the cooking methods and characteristics of certain ethnics in Sabah. It is also to introduce research results relating to the anthropology or heritage of food done by UMS researchers. This is also a way to conserve the culture of the locals in Sabah.

A local ethnic food sale, including traditional food preparation and a research exhibition are also planned for the event which will start from 9.00 am – 4.30 pm at the Foyer, FSMP. Various other interesting activities and games have also been planned.

For those who would like to showcase their culinary skills, a cooking competition will also be held. The closing date for registration is on 31 October 2014.
